Monsoon Rains Cause Severe Landslides in Cox’s Bazar Refugee Camps

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe humanitarian distress across Cox’s Bazar district. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported 95 landslides in multiple refugee camps between July 4 and July 9, 2026. These environmental disasters killed at least 15 Rohingya refugees. Therefore, international rescue teams have mobilized immediate emergency support for the affected families.

The severe weather conditions caused immense physical destruction to local infrastructure. The continuous rainfall destroyed thousands of basic shelters, educational centers, and religious facilities. Consequently, 4,307 Rohingya individuals lost their homes completely. Furthermore, more than 26,000 refugees suffered varying degrees of damage to their personal properties and living spaces.

The casualties include vulnerable young students from regional learning centers. On Wednesday afternoon, a massive wall collapsed under heavy mud at an educational facility in Camp 5. The structural failure killed five female students instantly. Meanwhile, emergency medical staff treated eight other critically injured students at a nearby hospital. Landslides also claimed eight more lives across Jamtoli, Kutupalong, and Balukhali camps earlier this week.

The local administration is currently working alongside humanitarian agencies to manage the emergency response. Officials shifted approximately 100 vulnerable families to safer locations. Volunteers are monitoring the remaining high-risk zones. However, meteorological offices predict heavy downpours will continue until July 11. This situation creates additional threats of flash floods and fresh landslides for the remaining population.
