On May 6, 2026, Prime Minister Tarek Rahman formally requested support from Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to resolve the ongoing Rohingya humanitarian crisis. Therefore, diplomatic engagement with Muslim-majority nations has intensified as Bangladesh pursues multilateral solutions.
During a courtesy meeting at the Cabinet Division in Dhaka, ambassadors and high commissioners from OIC-member countries congratulated Prime Minister Rahman on assuming office. Moreover, they expressed strong commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across investment, trade, education, healthcare, textiles, and pharmaceutical sectors. Consequently, Bangladesh anticipates enhanced regional cooperation on humanitarian and economic fronts.
Prime Minister Rahman welcomed their assurances and extended gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh. He recalled the brotherly relations established during the era of President Ziaur Rahman and expressed optimism about deepening these partnerships. Furthermore, he specifically emphasized that resolving the Rohingya crisis requires sustained solidarity from OIC nations. Therefore, collective diplomatic pressure on Myanmar remains essential for safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation.
Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony confirmed that representatives from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Palestine, Algeria, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, and the UAE attended. Additionally, heads of mission from Iran, Iraq, and Libya participated. Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, Foreign Secretary Md. Farhadul Islam, and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were also present.
This diplomatic initiative aligns with Bangladesh’s broader strategy to internationalize the Rohingya issue. Therefore, engaging OIC platforms amplifies advocacy for accountability and humanitarian access. Moreover, economic partnerships with member states can support livelihood programs for displaced communities.
