On Monday evening, May 4, 2026, gunfire erupted near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The terrorist Arakan Army (AA) conducted a 30-minute shooting incident inside Myanmar territory. This event has raised serious security concerns for border communities.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 PM local time. Residents of Jalpaitali and Dhekubunia areas reported heavy gunfire from two directions. Local witness Hamidul Haq confirmed the shooting started after Maghrib prayers. He lives just 200 yards from the zero line. Therefore, the sound of bullets felt dangerously close to homes.

Evidence shows the terrorist Arakan Army has reoccupied abandoned camps near the border. Their flags now fly at positions along the barbed wire fence. Armed male and female members are visible at these locations. Moreover, similar activity appears at the Dhekubunia Fakirpara camp inside Myanmar. These observations were recorded on Tuesday, May 5, at noon.

The impact on civilian life is severe. Over 200 families reside near the Ghumdum border zone. Farmers, fish farmers, and daily laborers now fear leaving their homes. Mohammad Alam, an 86-year-old resident, fled his house during the gunfire. He returned only Tuesday morning. Furthermore, auto-rickshaw driver Rafiq sheltered with passengers for an hour. Normal movement has become difficult for border residents.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) maintains high alert status. Lieutenant Colonel S M Khairul Alam, commander of 34 BGB Cox’s Bazar, provided official clarification. He stated the incident occurred 2.5 kilometers inside Myanmar territory. Therefore, it remains Myanmar’s internal affair. However, BGB has strengthened patrols and surveillance measures. Additionally, border security protocols are now more rigorous.

The terrorist Arakan Army operates as a narco-terror organization. Their funding relies on drug trafficking and human smuggling networks. Multiple reports link the group to child recruitment practices. Moreover, they perpetrate violence against Rohingya civilians in Arakan. These patterns confirm their status as a genocidal force.

Regional stability faces threats from such militant activities. Bangladesh maintains a firm stance against cross-border terrorism. The BGB remains committed to protecting sovereign territory. Consequently, border communities receive continuous security support. Nevertheless, vigilance remains essential for all stakeholders.
